Why Gluten Free Soap?

Gluten free soap is a relatively new kid on the block.  When the scientific and medical communities in America finally determined for themselves the secret cause of puzzling symptoms in some very ill folks, we began to see gluten free products showing up in the marketplace.  But because gluten molecules are too large to penetrate the skin barrier, gluten free soaps weren't among those first products to appear.  In fact, there was a rather heated discussion surrounding the subject for quite awhile.

But fortunately, common sense won out in the end.  When was the last time you showered, bathed or washed your hair without opening your mouth?  Do gluten sensitive children splash and play in sudsy bathtubs just like other children?  Do wearers eventually eat gluten-containing lipstick from their lovely lips?  Do people wearing skin cremes and lotions containing gluten ever touch their faces or arms with the same fingers they eat with?  Does gluten-containing freshly shampooed and conditioned hair ever get brushed, tossled or idly twirled by those same fingers?  Yes, researchers now know that gluten free soap and cosmetics could indeed provide the last piece of someone's elusive hidden gluten puzzle.

Soapcakes are created as gluten free soap through careful attention to detail.  We purchase our certified organic, unrefined base oils from companies who also see the value of keeping their products as free from gluten cross contamination as possible.  Our gluten free soap equipment is kept dedicated and workers are required to not bring any gluten into the workspace.  Fancy additives in our gluten free soap, even though always natural or organic, are kept to a bare minimum as an extra precaution.  Even oats, which have recently become suspect for gluten, have been removed from all our gluten free soap recipes as a further measure.  Although testing methods are still somewhat limited and there appears to be no such thing as a tested zero gluten product, we go to great lengths to keep our gluten free soap as completely uncontaminated by any trace gluten as we possibly can.  We trust Soapcakes will fill all your family's gluten free soap needs.

Special note:  Since pure essential oils, unrefined organic shea butter and earth clays remain difficult to test for trace amounts of gluten, we suggest that you may want to consider our unscented, super-sudsy gluten free soap variety called Just Plain or our unscented, low-sudsing gluten free soap variety called Just Plain Olive, if your gluten sensitivities are particularly challenging.  Although we do our very best to create a useful gluten free soap and have many highly satisfied super sensitive customers, we cannot make any claims or claim zero gluten.  Please enjoy our artisan gluten free soap at your own risk.

As a further interesting note:  It has been found that those with latex sensitivities may want to avoid products which contain shea butter, as it appears to be in the same family.  Our Just Plain and Just Plain Olive recipes do NOT include shea butter.  All other varieties DO include shea butter.  Again, please enjoy any of our  handmade hypoallergenic Soapcakes at your own risk.
